Shaw University is a private liberal arts institution and historically black university located in Raleigh, which is the seat of Wake County and the capital city of the US state of North Carolina. Raleigh, also known as as the `City of Oaks`, for the many oak trees found in the area, and named after Sir Walter Raleigh, is one of the fastest growing cities and, currently, the 45th largest city in the United States.
Shaw University was officially established in December, 1865, and its motto is `Pro Christo Et Humanitate`, which, in English translation means `For Christ and Humanity`. Shaw offers is students today various educational programs in numerous fields of study, including undergraduate degrees in areas such as business and accounting, natural science, religion and philosophy, and education and computer science, as well as graduate programs such as the Master of Divinity, the Master of Arts in Religious Education and the Master of Science Degree in Early Childhood Instruction.
Shaw's athletic teams play in NCAA Division II, in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference, in 14 varsity athletic teams, including in basketball, football, baseball, tennis and other. Their distinctive colors are garnet and white, and their mascot is the Bear.
Many of the students from Shaw, have made themselves notable in various areas, after graduation, among these people/alumni, considered noteworthy, there are: Dr. James E. Shepard - founder and President of North Carolina Central University, Ella Baker - leader of SNCC and civil rights activist, Lee Johnson - President & CEO of Mechanics & Farmers Bank, Ronald `Flip` Murray - NBA player (Chicago Bulls), plus others.
